But in the same way that rock 'n' roll is more than just the sum of a few chords, nortec has expanded well beyond some creative samples and a break beat. Graphic artists, fashion designers and filmmakers have been inspired to shrug off Tijuana's reputation as a cultural void and address the contrary realities of a place that's neither First World nor Third World; a culture that is neither Mexican nor American; an economy propelled by the dual engines of drug traffic and high-tech maquiladoras; a large, stable middle class sandwiched between grotesque poverty and excessive narco wealth. The goal, simply, is to transform the strangeness of Tijuana into art.

Shawn Michael Perry - Artist of the Month for September 2007

 <itunes:author>Shawn Michael Perry</itunes:author>

Shawn Michael Perry is on the move...
By Wishelle Banks

CARSON CITY, Nev. - Singer/songwriter/actor Shawn Michael Perry is one ambitious man. As a recording artist, he's had the savvy to court the radio industry, successfully persuading to place cuts from his debut CD with his band, Shawn Michael Perry & Only the Brave, on America's pop, top 40, adult contemporary, college and country charts. He did his research, made his move and took a leap of faith.

''They hit on every one,'' Perry exulted. ''One song! I was like, wow!''

That single, ''Forever,'' competed against the likes of Gwen Stefani and Daughtry, and solidified Perry's quest for prominence on the charts, an achievement that followed a very concerted pursuit of America's airwaves. Retooling and re-tuning for the country charts, Perry adapted to his following there.

''A great song's a great song,'' figured Perry, explaining his take on the songwriting process. ''It's all equations. Sometimes it hits me like a ton of bricks and the whole song's right there, and I've got to scramble for pen and paper, the guitar or piano, and get my recorder going. Other times, it's a process, a puzzle-making type of thing where there's a little hook here or a guitar riff there. It'll just nag at you.''

Perry was born in San Diego to a Salish father and a Panamanian mother of Mayan ancestry. One of his earliest memories of performing was singing Christmas songs in kindergarten.

''I was hooked from day one,'' he said, referring to the sound of applause. ''What got me excited about music was 'The Flip Wilson Show,' and Michael Jackson used to come on there with the Jackson 5. I just thought that was it. As soon as I heard his voice and how people reacted to him, I just knew as a young child that that's exactly what I wanted to do.''

Perry sang in top 40 and country bands in Montana and Wyoming, but painful rejection from a critical naysayer in his past was the catalyst for wanting more.

Stevie Salas - Artist of the Month for June 2007

 <itunes:author>Stevie Salas</itunes:author>

Go back in time and catch Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure then guess who played those fiery guitar riffs flying off the fingers of George Carlin’s character, Rufus. If you answered, “Stevie Salas,” then a big, “No way, yes way!” to you.

Considered by many to be one of the top fifty guitarists of all time, Salas has gained the attention of musicians around the world as well as classic rockers like Mick Jagger, George Clinton, Billy Gibbons, Zakk Wylde, Billy Idol, Rick Neilson, and Rod Stewart.

A self-taught Native-American (Mescalero Apache) guitar prodigy and creator of his own rock genre, Salas’ aggressive dark punk-funk style reflects the journey he's taken from the streets of San Diego to concert arenas. It was a hard stretch of road, but his career took off when funkadelic master George Clinton asked if he’d sit in as his studio guitarist.

The Clinton connection helped pave the way to a recording offer from Island Records - the most attractive in the company's history. Salas soon became an item in the music world and was embraced by fellow musicians Bootsy Collins, Was (Not Was), and Eddie Money. It wasn't long before young Stevie was flying around the world in the private jet of classic rocker Rod Stewart.

Then, Mick Jagger rang him up for another unbelievable romp in stardom.

Stevie’s first solo outing, Stevie Salas: Colorcode (1990) shows heavy classic rock influences with is heavily influenced by a broad spectrum of early rockers. His second CD, Back from the Living (1994), outran big guns like the Stones and Aerosmith on the Japanese music charts.

Today, Salas music resumé lists 18 solo albums and his contributions to a series of compilation works as a guest artist. Modern Guitars caught up with singer-songwriter-producer Stevie Salas after he landed from a bit of surfing in Costa Rica and laying down some new tracks for his next CD that he tells us will be called, Stevie Salas: What It Was to Be, What It Is.

Jackie Bird - Grace, beauty and spirituality

"Long time ago, when the Wamakas'kan (animal nation, including man) came to a shocking awakening, because the world they were enjoying became dark and ugly, and they realized, that, they were not living the teachings of Tunkasina (Grandfather/God) and the Universal Law, of Love-for self and one another, Respect-for self and one another, Honor-for self and one another, these are only some of the teachings that they were supposed to live by, but they did not pay attention and lived a life of recklessness, and abused their energy they were given by the Tunkasina (Grandfather/God), which led to a life of corruption, greed, and a unnatural lifestyle. The Wamakas'kan did not know were to turn to for help, and were silent, suddenly off in the distance they heard a noise, and were silent, and it pleased the heart, as the sound came closer, they realized that this sound was Wakan (holy/sacred), a "Sacred Vibration", that brought tears to the eyes. When they could see the "thing" making the noise, it was a Bird. The bird sang, "follow me, I will show you a place of peace and harmony, where there is Respect, Love, and Honor". Wopida (Thank-You), Jackie Bird for your energy and healing of our Dakota Oyate (people) with the songs and good vibrations." Mitakuye Oyasin (all my Relatives) Marty Indian School

Rome New York’s tiger man hails from the Mowhawk Nation which can’t help but inform some songs but don’t get Jimmy Wolf ‘s thing confused with some other brands of modern native derived music. He ain’t playin’ no flute and the only new age Mr. Wolf delivers is that of straight up american roots music. Although scarred and marked by Hound Dog Taylor at an early age I’m sure he grew to love the north Mississippi masters like Kimbrough, Burnside , and Ford among others as well whose emphasis is more on full vibe than on some wanky over-used abundance of manual dexterity. Some call Wolf’s music “Punk Blues” but that ain’t all right and does not tell even the half of it. Yeah he kicks his blues up to “8” ‘til it rocks harder than the ‘stones vs Chuck Berry street fight. He’ll also shift it low down onto Highway 7 and make your girl want to roll in the midnight cotton with him and a quart bottle of golden ‘shine. He’ll break your heart like Bon Scott or Jerry Lee or Black Crowes and it ain't pretty. But when he throws a chunk of kool smart art alt pop from behind you you gotta hope he’ll do it again. Jimmy Wolf’s thing is Super Live Full House Rockin’ Back Alley Scrappin’ dirty lovin’ blues. and more. Hindsley, who has performed throughout northwest Wisconsin and Minnesota over the years, is actively pursuing a recording career. Her unique ability to infuse R&B, hip hop, gospel, jazz and Native American singing draws fans of all kind.

Danny Estrada & EV Garcia - Artist of the month for August 2006

 <itunes:author>Danny Estrada and EV Garcia</itunes:author>

Every decade or so, a great new band based out of L.A.s Eastside crosses cultural boundaries and language barriers, and merges into the mainstream music scene as a talent to be reckoned with.

East Los Angeles youthful UPGROUND are clearly this decades band from the barrio to cross that divide. Their music is an exciting fresh musical blend of ska, reggae, cumbia, rock and funk. The Latin Ska music scene has embraced their music; however the material they are releasing on their first full length CD is too diverse to be limited to any one genre. It is indeed a variation of many sounds sure to appeal to all.

UPGROUND began their musical journey early on, first at home and then at school. Participating in the school jazz band and orchestras these young musicians began to hone their skills. At home, the mix of traditional Latin music ranging from salsa to regional Mexican and everything in between began to fuse with the classic rock, blues, reggae, ska, and jazz they were listening to on their own. Undoubtedly, this eclectic range of music played an important role in developing into a delicate fusion of sounds that we now know as UPGROUND.

The members are Adolfo Mercado Jr. Drums, Danny Estrada - Vocals & Guitar, Chris "Bolillo" Manjarrez Bass, and what has been introduced as the best horn section coming out of Los Angeles": Everado Garcia - Vocals & Trumpet, Chris De Los Santos - Tenor Sax & Keyboards, Eric Carrillo - Alto Sax & Timbales, Joseph Quinonez - Trombone, and Aaron Perez - Alto Sax

UPGROUND has been playing locally for over 4 years and through their music these young men have developed a bond that translates into pure, raw musical energy. Their explosive live performances, displays their dedication, and pride not only to their music and the band as a whole, but to the communities they live in.

This has transformed them into one of the most sought after young bands in Los Angeles competitive Latin music scene. In a short period of time they have shared the stage with such acts as Ozomatli, Tom Morello(Rage Against the Machine), Tierra, Malo, Quetzal, Voodo Glow Skulls, Go Betty Go, Quinto Sol and The B-Side Players to name a few. On the other side of the fence, they also had the privilege to open for Alternative bands like The Killers and The Chemical Brothers at the The Shrine Auditorium.

Critical acclaim and recognition greeted UPGROUNDs first EP and their live performances as time went on, culminating in a surprise April 22, 2006 Los Angeles Times review. Writer Agustin Gurza wrote a glowing review of their show called Theyre Younger than they sound and said: Despite their age, they seem to channel artists many of their peers have never heard of Bob Marley, Glenn Miller, Arturo Sandoval, Tower of Power. And they play with a surprising mastery of complex harmonies and time changes. The review led to Nationwide attention including an offer to play Hollywood & Highland (Kodak Theater)s Fridays by the Fountain, and interest from the Reality TV show Jammin (on SITV).

UPGROUND releases their debut full length CD titled Feel the Vibe in summer of 2006. Over a year in the making, it was Produced by Rudy Salas of Tierra, Mixed by David Salas (who produced La Sinfonia (Sony), Don Abusivo (Universal), El Pecador (Universal), and La Epidemia (EMI)), and Mastered by Brian Springer/ Precision Studios, who has produced/recorded Pink, Christina Aguilera, Mya, Snoop Dog, J-LO/Ja Rule, Ashanti, Alicia Keys, Michael Jackson, Fat Joe, Mariah Carey, and many more. UPGROUND does not have a major Label record deal yet however they are delivering a Major Record Label product. Watch out for UPGROUND, this is only the beginning.

Paul Underwood - Artist of the month for July 2006

 <itunes:author>Paul Underwood</itunes:author>

Interview with Valencia Blackhorse, Navajo of Native Youth Magazine

Imagine being attacked by people you thought were your friends. Some, like Cheyenne musician Paul Underwood, compare it to a shark attack. That's also the name of his recently released album.

Shark Attack features Underwood's extraordinary guitar playing. I was immediately drawn to the song “Blue Moon” (track 7 on the album). The album is mostly instrumental that captivates you while listening to his original sound.

I thought Shark Attack was an interesting title for an album, so I asked Paul to explain it further? “It holds a lot of meaning of fake
people shaking your hand, being your friend, but waiting for a moment to attack. Fake people unfortunately are out there. Producers may promise, but they don’t keep it. That’s why I self promote,” Underwood said.

Underwood spent the last year and a half working seven days a week taking care of the elderly plus raising four wonderful children. His spare time, which is in the evenings, is devoted to creating and recording his music in his home studio in Billings, Montana. This explains the soon to be completion of his sixth CD Sands of Time.

So what keeps Underwood deeply focused on his music? For starters, it's made a difference in people's lives. One of Underwood's patients recently approached him and said just listening to his music saved his life. Another form of motivation for Underwood is having a second chance at life.

Underwood spent 26 years of his life in the party scene. “I went through a lot of hardships and mistakes over the years. I’ve seen a lot in my time. But with the trouble that I got myself into, I’ve been able to overcome all the mistakes one day at a time," he replied.

Underwood’s personal music favorites are Judas Priest, Scorpions, April Wine, Fleetwood Mac, ACDC and other '80s rock bands to name a few. The best time for Underwood to create music is in the evenings, a habit he formed three-and-a-half years ago.

Underwood started singing in his early teens and never took any singing lessons. He says he'd rather play the guitar than sing.

Currently Underwood is working with a group called ‘Dangerous Lazion’. He plays lead guitar. The music is a blend of everything. 'Sacred Ground' is similar to their style of music. Last March Underwood's music was picked up by radio stations in Europe. Paul acknowledged there are not many Native American rockers. The only one he knew of was BlackFoot. They released two albums and that was it.

Lastly, Paul expressed a personal message to the Native youth. “At all costs, please stay out of the drug and alcohol world. This is one of my strongest statements. It’s from personal experience. For all Indian youth, find something you love to do; art, pottery, anything. Believe in yourself. It has to be 100%. There is going to be a ton of sacrifices. Dreams do come true”, Paul said.

About the Songs

Whether we are singing old traditional songs passed down in our community, or singing the new ones composed by our singers, there always seem to be reasons to remember people, teachings, or events that are connected in our minds with these songs.

Sometimes we talk about those memories, but sometimes it is just part of our collective memories. It is an important part of these songs and why they are given to the people during the dance. We hope that this recording helps you to remember people and teachings in your lives that make a difference.
